Duchess of Edinburgh Marks 60 Years of Wellbeing of Women in Heartwarming London Visit

Duchess Sophie of Edinburgh shared a poignant moment on Monday as she reunited with Sir Marcus Setchell, the surgeon who played a critical role in saving her life during a life-threatening delivery, while attending the 60th-anniversary celebration of the womenโ€™s health charity Wellbeing of Women in London.

The Duchess, a patron of the charity since May 2021, met with volunteers at the event held at PwCโ€™s offices to express her gratitude for their ongoing support. During the visit, Sophie crossed paths with Sir Marcus, who delivered both her children, Lady Louise Windsor and James, Earl of Wessex, and served as Surgeon-Gynaecologist to the late Queen Elizabeth II.

In a heartwarming exchange, as they were introduced, the host remarked that no introduction was necessary, to which Sophie quipped, โ€œNot really,โ€ drawing smiles from the attendees.

Wellbeing of Women Chair, Professor Dame Lesley Regan, highlighted the charityโ€™s impactful legacy, noting its pioneering research into womenโ€™s health over six decades, including life-saving treatments and influencing policies worldwide.

Reflecting on her role as patron, Sophie previously shared her personal connection to the charity, saying, โ€œIโ€™m delighted to take on this role. I have a vested interest in it.โ€

The Duchessโ€™s advocacy stems from her own harrowing experience during Lady Louiseโ€™s delivery, during which she nearly lost her life due to severe internal bleeding and the loss of nine pints of blood. Sophie later opened the neonatal unit at Frimley Hospital, emphasising its vital role in saving lives, stating, โ€œIt can literally make the difference between life and deathโ€”as I can attest to.โ€

Sophieโ€™s enduring support for Wellbeing of Women underscores her commitment to advancing womenโ€™s health and celebrating the achievements of those dedicated to this vital cause.
