Reports suggest William could sideline stepmother when he becomes king
Questions are being raised about what role Queen Camilla will play in the royal family once King Charles’s reign ends and William takes the throne.
Traditionally, the widow of a king assumes the title of Queen Dowager, a position that reflects her past role as Queen Consort while honouring her connection to the late monarch. Whether Camilla will carry this title—or continue to have an active role in royal life—remains uncertain.
Much of her future will depend on William’s decisions as king, public opinion, and precedent within the monarchy. Some reports suggest she may retain Clarence House, while others believe she could be moved to a separate household.
Speculation intensified after claims surfaced that Camilla upset senior royals by taking a luxury holiday while Charles, battling cancer, remained at Balmoral. Palace insiders reportedly told Radar Online that Princess Anne and William were “unhappy” with her absence, with William said to be “incandescent with rage” over her behaviour.
“There are whispers that William is secretly plotting to cut her out after his father is gone,” the outlet reported, citing concerns that the Queen’s actions could affect Charles emotionally.
At the same time, other sources suggest Camilla has struck an agreement with Charles to secure her lifestyle and position beyond his reign, fuelling claims that she feels “untouchable” inside the palace.
Despite the controversy, public perception of Camilla has shifted dramatically in recent years. Once vilified, she is now seen by many as a loyal and stabilising force beside Charles. Whether that goodwill carries into William’s reign could determine just how prominent a role she continues to play.
