Former president calls monarch “a tremendous man” after state visit
Donald Trump has spoken candidly about King Charles’ health, praising the
monarch’s resilience while recalling their conversations during his UK state
visit.
The former US president and First Lady Melania Trump wrapped up their
three-day visit on Friday, September 19, after spending the first two days at
Windsor Castle with King Charles III and Queen Camilla.
Speaking to Fox News via the Daily Mail, Trump, 79, revealed that Charles, 76,
had faced “pretty tough stuff medically” but was now “doing great.” He
described the King as “a tremendous man who really stepped into a very tough
position… and the people love him in this country.”
Trump noted that while Charles has a strong interest in environmental issues,
much of their discussion focused on trade ties between the United States and
the United Kingdom. “We’re working a trade deal with the UK which is going to
be a good deal for both,” he said, adding that the talks also involved the
Prime Minister and senior officials.
Reflecting on Charles’ accession to the throne in 2022, Trump acknowledged the
challenge of following Queen Elizabeth II’s extraordinary reign. “She’s got
the all-time record probably, always will have,” he said. “To follow that is
pretty tough. She was really beloved.”
Trump’s admiration for the late Queen has long been clear. One of his first
stops on arrival in the UK was St. George’s Chapel, where he and Melania laid
a wreath at her grave.
The couple departed Windsor on Thursday, posing for photographs and bidding
farewell to the King and Queen in Windsor’s Green Corridor before continuing
their official engagements elsewhere in the UK.
