Prince William Faces Security Crisis Ahead of Earthshot Prize Trip

Tensions rise in Rio de Janeiro as violent gang clashes cast doubt on the
Prince’s visit for the upcoming environmental awards ceremony.

Prince William’s travel plans for the Earthshot Prize ceremony in Rio de
Janeiro have been thrown into uncertainty following a surge in violence in the
Brazilian city. The Prince of Wales, who founded the Earthshot Prize to tackle
global environmental challenges, had been due to leave the UK in a few days
for the fifth annual ceremony, set for November 5.

However, security concerns have escalated after a deadly gang war erupted in
Rio earlier this week. The clashes, described as some of the worst in recent
years, have left dozens dead and prompted a large-scale military response.

“With Prince William and other dignitaries expected in Rio, security was
already tight,” a source told The Mirror. “But after this wave of violence,
the government has deployed thousands of extra police and military personnel
to maintain order.”

According to reports, 64 people were killed on Tuesday alone, including four
police officers, with 80 suspects taken into custody. The violence stemmed
from a government operation targeting the powerful drug cartel Comando
Vermelho. Officials described it as one of the largest police crackdowns in
Brazil’s history, planned for months in advance.

By Wednesday, the death toll had risen to at least 121, with estimates
suggesting it could reach 132. Brazilian President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva
condemned the violence, saying, “We cannot allow organised crime to continue
destroying families and spreading fear in our cities.”

The situation has created genuine concern over the Prince’s safety, with
sources warning that “all eyes will be on Rio” when he arrives. Despite the
chaos, preparations for the Earthshot Prize ceremony continue, though it
remains unclear whether any changes will be made to the royal’s schedule.
