According to the source, planners believe Harry could push to return to the United Kingdom if the couple separated. Meghan Markle, though, has previously indicated she would not want to leave the United States, a difference the Palace reportedly sees as potentially difficult to navigate.
Speculation about tension grew after Harry said he hoped their children could spend part of their schooling in Britain. That comment, the insider says, pushed the Palace to consider how a separation might unfold.
Any formal agreement would resemble the one created for Diana, but with stricter language and stronger penalties for breaking the terms. The insider adds that Meghan Markle would likely keep using her Duchess of Sussex title, a calculated decision meant to prevent a damaging public clash.
The approach, they say, is focused on stability rather than confrontation.
