Prince Harry teases royal life at British American luncheon

The Duke of Sussex jokes about the drama behind palace walls

Harry kept the room laughing at the British American Council’s 65th Annual Christmas Luncheon in Santa Monica, where he reflected on what it was like to grow up within the royal family. The Duke of Sussex, who stepped back from royal duties in 2020 with Meghan Markle, compared his childhood to something straight out of Downton Abbey. According to People Magazine, he joked that people often ask whether life in the royal household was similar to the television drama. His answer was quick. One world is full of intrigue, formal dinners and marriages to Americans and the other is only a show.

He also took a more thoughtful turn while speaking about living in the United States as a British citizen. Calling the event the first Christmas party he had attended in some time, he said that being British is less about where you stand and more about what you stand for. He went on to say that celebrating the Fourth of July still feels new, especially considering it marks independence from his own ancestor many generations back.

The light tone continued with his recent appearance on The Late Show with Stephen Colbert, where he joked that he would be hopeless trying to audition for the role of a prince in a holiday film. He teased that Americans love Christmas movies and have a clear fascination with royalty which makes the combination an easy pitch. He even slipped in a reference to Donald Trump, saying he heard that Americans had elected a king.
