Former vet recalls the night the couple sat on the floor, waiting anxiously as their beloved beagle underwent surgery
Harry and Meghan Markle shared an emotional and deeply personal moment when their dog Guy was seriously injured, according to their former vet, Noel Fitzpatrick.
Speaking about the incident, Fitzpatrick recalled how the Duke and Duchess of Sussex stayed close to their beagle as he underwent surgery following a major accident in 2017. Rather than retreating to a private room, the couple chose to sit on the floor of the clinic, quietly waiting and hoping for good news.
Meghan was living in Canada at the time when Guy escaped and was later found with severe injuries to his front legs. She contacted Fitzpatrick to ask if he would operate. He agreed, and Guy was brought in for urgent treatment.
“The duke and duchess sat on the floor. We had cake. Guy was fixed,” Fitzpatrick said, describing the tense but intimate atmosphere as they waited together.
Despite a poor prognosis, Guy recovered under Fitzpatrick’s care and went on to live until January this year. After his passing, the vet received a handwritten note from Meghan, thanking him for giving her more time with a dog she deeply loved.
Guy had been adopted by Meghan in 2015 from a rescue in Canada after facing euthanasia in the US. In a heartfelt tribute shared earlier this year, she reflected on how he was by her side through every major chapter of her life, from her time on Suits to her engagement, motherhood, and everything in between.

She also revealed that shortly before moving to the UK, Guy suffered a serious accident that left him unable to walk. While other vets were doubtful, Fitzpatrick believed recovery was possible. Meghan said she and Harry would drive late at night to visit Guy as he slowly healed at a clinic in Surrey.
“I will always be grateful,” she wrote, thanking Fitzpatrick, veterinary teams past and present, and the friends who helped care for Guy over the years.
For Harry and Meghan, Guy was never just a pet. He was a constant presence through quiet moments and major milestones alike, and his loss marked the end of a long, shared journey.
