Archie and Lilibet’s Royal Future in Doubt

Harry and Meghan face major setback as William prepares for reign

Harry and Meghan have reportedly been hit with unsettling news about their children’s place in the monarchy. According to royal insiders, Archie and Lilibet are unlikely to take on roles as working royals once Prince William becomes king.

The Duke and Duchess of Sussex stepped down from their royal duties in 2020 and have since built a new life in Montecito, California, with their two children. Despite the family’s move, Harry is said to still hope that Archie and Lilibet might one day hold meaningful roles within the institution.

That hope, however, seems slim. The Sunday Times reported that there is “bemusement in royal circles” over Harry’s expectations, with sources stressing that William is committed to a slimmed-down monarchy. This plan would limit working royal roles to a select few, excluding not only Harry’s children but also cousins such as Beatrice, Eugenie, and Zara Tindall.

Royal commentator Richard Palmer recently told the i Paper that while Harry and Meghan could have held prominent roles had they stayed, the chances of their children serving the monarchy in the future are “negligible”—and would likely have been the same even if their parents had remained.
