Duke and Duchess of Edinburgh take on a growing role in the monarchy
King Charles has recognised Prince Edward and Duchess Sophie for their recent
royal tour in Nepal, a significant assignment that highlights their increasing
prominence within the royal family.
On Friday, Buckingham Palace issued an official update detailing the couple’s
engagements during their visit, which focused on strengthening ties between
the UK and Nepal while addressing key global issues.
“The Duke and Duchess of Edinburgh have been connecting with communities in
Nepal, celebrating shared history and looking to the future,” the statement
read.
During their visit, Edward and Sophie planted a magnolia tree at the Godawari
Botanical Gardens and explored the Living Mountain Lab at the International
Centre for Integrated Mountain Development, where they learned about efforts
to combat the climate crisis in the Himalayas.
At the Gurkha Welfare Trust’s Area Welfare Centre in Kaski, they met former
Gurkhas and their families, gaining insight into the support and care provided
to veterans. The couple also attended the Recruit Intake 2025 Attestation
Parade in Pokhara, marking more than 200 years of partnership between the UK
and Nepal and honouring the service of the Gurkhas in the British Army.
The update follows reports that King Charles may assign Edward and Sophie’s
children more defined roles in the future. Additionally, royal sources suggest
that Prince William could consider further recognising the Duke and Duchess
for their continued loyalty to the monarchy.
