Former Prince Andrew is expected to mark a quiet and emotional Christmas this year, with the Royal Lodge chapter of his life drawing to a close. The Duke of York is preparing to leave the Windsor property after being instructed to vacate by King Charles, making this festive season his last at the home he has occupied for more than two decades.
Royal commentator Jennie Bond suggests the timing has only added to the weight of the moment. Christmas, she says, has been particularly difficult for Andrew as he reflects on being absent from the wider royal family’s celebrations at Sandringham.
Andrew has shared Royal Lodge with his former wife Sarah Ferguson since 2008, despite their divorce. However, both are now expected to move on, with the house already undergoing a clear-out. Bond has claimed many of Andrew’s personal belongings have been removed, leaving the property in a transitional state.
The expert also hinted that the pressure of past controversies may have affected Andrew’s long-standing bond with Ferguson. Once seen as unusually close for a divorced couple, their future together now appears uncertain, with the strain of recent years possibly forcing difficult decisions.
Bond noted that Christmas often brings unresolved tensions into sharper focus. While the season is meant to unite families, it can also deepen divisions. For Andrew, spending what may be his final Christmas at Royal Lodge is likely to stir mixed emotions.
After more than 20 years of family memories tied to the house, the departure is expected to be painful. According to Bond, sadness and resentment are natural reactions when a long-time home and familiar traditions come to an end.
