Meghan Markle Criticised for ‘Deliberate Digs’ at Royal Family

Duchess’s comments risk undermining Harry’s peace efforts with King Charles

Meghan Markle has drawn fresh criticism after remarks in a new interview were branded as subtle digs at the royal family—potentially adding strain to Harry’s efforts to repair his relationship with King Charles.

In a sit-down with Emily Chang on Bloomberg’s The Circuit, the Duchess of Sussex reflected on her time as a working royal, describing parts of it as “inauthentic.” She also recalled being expected to wear pantyhose, a tradition she suggested did not fit her personal identity.

Royal commentator Rebecca English of the Daily Mail, speaking on the Palace Confidential podcast, said Meghan’s answers appeared carefully worded but still amounted to “deliberate” digs at the monarchy. “Her answers were well thought out and there were definitely a few digs at the Royal Family,” she noted.

English added that Meghan’s comments implied she felt silenced during her time in the institution: “She didn’t mention the Royal Family by name, but it’s quite clear what she was referring to—where she wasn’t able to be as vocal as she wanted to be and was not able to use her voice properly.”

The royal expert also called out inconsistencies in Meghan’s account. While the Duchess described royal expectations as restrictive, she also said she enjoys wearing monochrome outfits because they are simple to style. “There’s so much inconsistency there that doesn’t quite make sense and is a very revisionist version of what she experienced,” English argued, adding pointedly: “On this, it seems that recollections may vary.”
