The Duke of Sussex admits he still thinks Doria Ragland’s gumbo has the edge over Meghan’s version
Harry has always spoken warmly about family, and that affection is on full display when it comes to his relationship with his mother-in-law, Doria Ragland. Viewers get a glimpse of that bond in With Love, Meghan: Holiday Celebration, a festive Netflix special that offers a relaxed look at life in the kitchen during the holidays.
In one scene, Meghan Markle is preparing a traditional Christmas gumbo, a dish inspired by her mum, who often cooked it during the festive season. As Harry wanders in to see what is simmering, he jokes that the timing feels planned. Gumbo, he says, has long been one of his favourites, especially when Doria is the one behind the pot.
Meghan then shares a small but telling detail about their family dynamic. Her mum, she explains, always used to set aside a portion of gumbo just for Harry before adding the fish. It is a gesture that clearly stuck with him.
While Meghan insists her own version is a little spicier, even warning him to keep a towel nearby, Harry takes the heat in good humour. Laughing, he admits he can feel the spice straight away but still praises the dish. Then comes the honest verdict. It is delicious, he says, but he is not convinced it quite tops her mum’s recipe.
Meghan’s reaction is instant and playful. She jokes that her mum will be thrilled to hear that and calls it exactly the right thing to say about your mother-in-law.
With Love, Meghan: Holiday Celebration is now streaming on Netflix, offering plenty of warm moments like this one that highlight the easy, affectionate dynamic within the family.
