Duke of Sussex loses trusted ally as event prepares for Birmingham
Prince Harry has suffered a setback as the Invictus Games prepare for a high-profile return to the UK.
His close friend and fellow veteran JJ Chalmers has stepped down as a trustee after just two years, according to the Daily Mail. The 38-year-old former Royal Marines reservist and Invictus gold medallist has been one of the Duke of Sussex’s strongest supporters.
The news comes as the Games, created for wounded, injured, and sick service members, prepare for their eighth edition in Birmingham. It will be the first time the competition has been hosted in the UK since its launch in London in 2014.
Chalmers, who rose to wider fame on Strictly Come Dancing in 2020, has often credited the Games with transforming his life. After suffering devastating injuries in a roadside blast in Afghanistan in 2011, he called Invictus the “catalyst in my recovery.” Only two months ago, he reflected that his entire career as a broadcaster and speaker was made possible through his involvement.
Despite stepping down, he will continue to support the Games in an ambassadorial role. Growing professional commitments and family life as a father of two were said to be behind his decision not to extend his term.
The timing comes as Harry faces other challenges, with his charity Sentebale recently under scrutiny after bullying allegations. Though dismissed by the Charity Commission, the claims have still created unease around the organisation.
