Prince’s initiative offers new lifeline to those risking their lives for
the planet’s future
Prince William has turned his words on conservation into real-world action.
Speaking at the United for Wildlife summit in Brazil, the Prince of Wales
announced a major new effort to safeguard indigenous defenders of the
Amazon—those living on the frontline of the fight to protect the rainforest.
“Indigenous peoples and local communities have long been protectors of the
world’s most critical ecosystems,” William told delegates. “But today, their
lives are increasingly at risk, and their lands are under mounting threats. If
we are serious about tackling the climate crisis and restoring nature, we must
stand with those who defend it.”

This initiative expands on his earlier ranger insurance scheme launched during
the Earthshot Prize in South Africa. That programme provides affordable
medical evacuation and in-service insurance to wildlife rangers—offering
crucial protection for those working in dangerous conditions. Created in
partnership with the Tusk Trust and the Game Ranger Association of Africa, it
already covers more than 6,000 rangers across the continent.

Now, by extending support to South America, the Prince is taking his
conservation mission global. The Amazon, often called the lungs of the planet,
faces growing threats from illegal logging, mining, agriculture, and
trafficking. Indigenous activists working to defend it often risk their lives
in the process. William’s latest move ensures that those protecting nature’s
most vital regions are, in turn, protected themselves.
