King Charles has no plans to abdicate and remains focused on duty despite cancer treatment
A royal expert believes the transition to the next monarch could arrive earlier than once assumed as King Charles III continues treatment for an undisclosed form of cancer.
Speaking to Us Weekly, royal commentator Richard Fitzwilliams said there is growing recognition that Prince William and his family represent the clear future of the monarchy, and that William’s time as king may come sooner than originally expected.
Despite the speculation, insiders insist Charles has no intention of stepping aside. One source said the monarch remains committed to his role, stressing that duty comes first and that he plans to keep working for as long as he is able.
At the same time, another insider claimed palace officials have been quietly preparing for all possibilities. According to the source, contingency plans have been in place for some time, with an understanding that a transition could happen sooner rather than later. A close confidant added that there is uncertainty around how much time Charles has left, noting concerns about whether the cancer is curable.
Royal expert Kristen Meinzer offered a more measured view. She said reports vary, with some suggesting William is already handling matters behind the scenes, while others maintain the king remains firmly in charge. Meinzer believes the latter is closer to the truth, pointing out that Charles waited decades for the crown and is unlikely to relinquish control easily.
She also shared an update on Catherine, Princess of Wales, saying Catherine is doing much better. According to Meinzer, she has been seen out more frequently than last year, and once she reaches the one year mark of being in remission, it is possible she will gradually return to more royal duties.
