Letter sent after Thomas Markle’s surgery signals concern but little sign of reconciliation
A royal expert has offered a fresh assessment of the strained relationship between Meghan Markle and her father, Thomas Markle, days after it emerged that she had reached out following his major surgery.
Speaking to GB News, royal commentator Richard Fitzwilliams said the gesture, while significant, does not appear to signal a broader reconciliation. According to Fitzwilliams, the circumstances surrounding the letter suggest Meghan may not be seeking renewed contact beyond this step.
He explained that while the contents of the letter remain private, the wider fallout between father and daughter points to continued distance. “I don’t know what the letter says,” he noted, adding that the overall picture implies she does not want further contact at this stage.
Fitzwilliams also acknowledged that family relationships can change, even after long periods of estrangement. However, he stressed that, for now, the situation appears unchanged. From a public perspective, he said, there is little to suggest an immediate shift in their relationship.
His comments followed confirmation from Meghan’s spokesperson that a letter had been delivered to Thomas through “reliable and trusted contacts” after earlier attempts to reach him directly were unsuccessful.
The royal expert described the ongoing rift as painful for both sides, calling it a tragedy that has unfolded over time. He added that the reasons behind the breakdown have long been understood from Meghan’s point of view, even if the outcome remains deeply unfortunate.
Fitzwilliams also touched on the unanswered questions surrounding Harry’s relationship with Thomas Markle. He said it has never been clearly explained why Harry did not meet Meghan’s father when the couple were engaged, describing it as a lingering mystery that still defies clear explanation.
